Was Monty Python’s ‘The Life of Brian’ Blasphemous?

On November 9, 1979, the BBC program ‘Friday Night, Saturday Morning‘ hosted a debate on Monty Python’s movie ‘The Life of Brian‘. The movie had been banned in parts of Britain, due to claims that it was blasphemous. Arguing in favor of this accusation were Malcolm Muggeridge, a TV broadcaster and Mervyn Stockwood, the Bishop of Southwark. Those arguing in defense of the movie were two of the movie’s stars, John Cleese and Michael Palin. Now after 35 years, I think it’s safe to say that Cleese and Palin won the debate, as Stockwood and Muggeridge are mere footnotes.
