The Story Of The Bugatti Model 100P Airplane

In addition to designing cars, Italian born and French naturalized citizen Ettore Bugatti also designed airplanes. In what appears to have been a case of bad timing, Bugatti’s proposed Model 100P, a 900 horsepower, 500MPH race plane, was scheduled to appear at the Deutsch de la Meurthe Cup Race in 1939, the same year the second world war began. In order to keep the airplane from falling into the hands of the Nazis, Bugatti had the plane hidden for the duration of the war and the aircraft never flew. Imagine what the Nazis could have accomplished had they possessed such an aircraft. Thank god that is relegated to the what-ifs of history.
