C-SPAN History Of The State Of The Union
This Tuesday, Barack Obama will give his sixth State of the Union address before the 113th Congress. The tradition has evolved over the years with presidents Washington and Adams delivering the speech in person in front of the Congress. But from presidents Jefferson to Taft (1801-1912), the State of the Union was only a written report delivered to Congress. President Wilson revived the tradition of delivering it in person starting again in 1913.
